In honor of National Egg Day (if you hadn’t picked up on our feelings about the holiday here at OGP, click here), I am going to share with you the story of 26 brilliant little chicks.

See the funny things about eggs is that most people tend to ignore exactly what it is that they are eating. Eggs don’t just spontaneously fall from the sky, scrambled or fried to your liking –shocking, I know – but in fact come from a chicken and if allowed to incubate and grow, these amazing eggs will become baby chicks!

And who doesn’t love a baby chick? All fuzzy and cute. Unfortunately, not very many chickens get to grow up as these 26 peepers will, so I urge you to listen to this story and think about how much you have come to adore these chicks and consider joining us in our non-celebration of National Egg Day!

26 Little Peeps

“Your value doesn’t decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth.” – Ted Rubin

As Kyle Behrend tells OGP, “Thankfully for 26 tiny chicks, someone DID see the box they had been thoughtlessly abandoned in.”

The box of chicks was discovered in the Victoria Market, a sorry excuse for a shelter for the chicks. With a single air hole, it is somewhat of a miracle that so many of them managed to survive. Why the chicks were left in the middle of a busy shopping center is unknown.

Behrend ponders some possibilities, “Had a member of the public left them there, assuming that in such a busy location, surely somebody would find and care for the chicks? Had a stallholder abandoned them after they failed to sell on the day? Were they all male and therefore destined to grow into testosterone- charged roosters, unwanted and outlawed in suburban areas? Were they even intended to be found at all?”

While it is yet to be seen if these particular chicks will grow into Hulk-roosters as Behrend muses, the sole detail that can be known from their story is that they came to be trapped in a small, stuffy box as the result of human involvement.

Thankfully, someone discovered the box and the 26 little lives were transported to their loving new home, Edgar’s Mission farm animal sanctuary.

According to Behrend, the chicks quickly recovered from the trauma of being trapped in a box, “After only having known them for less than 24 hours, we saw unique personalities emerging. There were the brave and the bold, the shy and wary and the downright cheeky, who would jump on your feet and take a ride on your shoelaces, all in the name of fun.”

Watching their inquisitive characters come to life, members of Edgar’s Mission couldn’t possibly imagine how these baby chicks were at one time ever considered worthless.

After a month of care and kindness, the chicks have grown in “leaps and bounds” always willing to interact with people, forgetting the apathy one human once showed them.

Behrend tells OGP, these days, the chicks, “do not hesitate to take a ride on our volunteers’ shoulders as they carry out their cleaning duties around the sanctuary,” demonstrating just how, “Brave and resilient, personable and endearing” they all are.

Had they not been rescued by Edgar’s Mission, it is clear that these little peeps would not have had much of a future at all. Now in the good care of the sanctuary, “[their] future is now secure and they will scratch in the soil, bathe in the dust, bask in the sunshine, forage for food, climb on many a human and do everything else that make a chicken’s life complete for the remainder of their natural lives.”

Fifteen of these chicks have recently been adopted by a dear friend and supporter of Edgar’s Mission, Maree Trail, who has happily opened her home and heart to these babies.

In the words of Behrend, “Time and again, animals will remain the truest test of our humanity. How we treat them, how we think about them and how we value them, for the individuals they are rather than for what we believe they are ‘worth’, all tell the world so much about who we are as individuals.”

I could not agree any more with this statement, and I hope it (and the crazy adorable faces of these chicks) will inspire you to carry the same compassion for all living things in your heart.
